THORNABY CHURCHES

Thornaby has a varied selection of churches and places of worship.
From the Ancient Norman church of St Peter on the Village Green to the Sikh Temple on the Town Centre.

Over the years churches have been knocked down and others have been built. In 1890 they were as follows.

St. Luke's, Mandale road - Sunday services,10-30 a.m. and 6-30 p.m.
At Queen Street Mission Room and Trafalgar Street Mission Room, Sunday Schools are held at 9-30 a.m. and 2-0 p.m.
St. Patrick's Catholic School Chapel, Cranworth street - Rector, Very Rev. Canon Gerald A. Shanahan; and Rev. Father - O'Gorman, assistant. Mass at 9-0 and 11-0 am., and Benediction at 6-30 p.m.

The corps officer is Envoy Barbara Snook The hall is in Westbury Street. It's in a one-way system; from the Acklam Rd end of Lanehouse Rd, turn right at traffic lights into Westbury St; from the Thornaby Rd end of Lanehouse Rd turn left at traffic lights into Westbury St. The hall is at the end of Westbury St on the right-hand side.

SUNDAY MEETINGS: 10-11am, 6-7.15pm.
Young people's activities recommencing soon.
WEEKDAY ACTIVITIES: Women's meeting (Home League): Mon 2pm.

Luncheon club: Thurs 12noon.
Over-60 club: Thurs 2.15pm.
Parent and toddler group: Wed 10am.
Brownies: Mon 6pm.
The corps also runs the KENNEDY HOUSE outpost.
The home league fellowship meet there on Thurs at 6.15pm.
Thornaby Salvationists say: 'In the words of one child, our hall is "old on the outside but new on the inside" - warm and comfortable, with a congregation of mainly older people but with more younger people joining; age is no bar as we rejoice together in the Lord!'.

GURU NANAK GURDWARA AND SIKH COMMUNITY CENTRE on Allensway.

GURDWARA - (the door or the gateway to the Guru) is the name given to the Sikh's place of worship, commonly addressed as Sikh temple in the western world.
The Sikh scriptures are recited or sung and sermons are delivered. Guru Granth Sahib is placed on high palanquin under a canopy in the middle of one end of the hall. As well as sermons and the singing of the scriptures, the congregation is expected to participate in the ceremonies of birth, baptism, marriage, death and celebration of festivals.
The Gurdwara is a place for acquiring a spiritual knowledge and wisdom. It is open to every one regardless of age, sex, caste, or creed. Here all men, women and children are treated as equal. It offers shelter and food to any one in need
