THORNABY TEESDALE

Thornaby has seen many changes over the last 100 years.

With the collapse of the British Shipbuilding industry the old Head Wrightson ship and engineering yards were left desolate for years.

Over the past 10 years the whole site has had a massive transformation and now boasts a university complex to rival any other.The Stockton (should be Thornaby)Annexe of Durham University was built in the centre of the site and coincided with the building of the Tees Barrage.This effectively made the River Tees a freshwater lake rather than a dirty tidal estuary.The river levels are now constant and some of the best fishing in the North can be had all along the Thornaby banks.

To go with the University,accomodation blocks were built for visiting students.They come from all over the world to specialise here.A second housing estate has just been opened for the influx of our visitors.

There are many office blocks and call centres built around the estate and a new Millenium bridge has been built to link the Teesdale area to Stockton High street.

Future developments planned are a hotel, a new building for Stockton and Billingham Technical college and further call centre style offices.
