The school is committed to providing a 'broad, balanced and relevant curriculum based on the national curriculum, while maintaining a caring Catholic community where prayer, worship and liturgy are an integral part of life'. The school runs 'a number' of extra-curricular activities during lunch times, after school and during half term. These include mixed football, netball, badgers and cross country. The school is proud of its sporting successes. Pupils are 'regular' cross country champions including at the Numthorpe Invitation which draws children from a wide area within the old county of Cleveland, and are 'often' Thornaby town champions at local swimming championships. 'Many' ex-pupils represent the county and country at a wide range of sports including football, swimming, gymnastics and archery. The school serves an 'extremely varied' community from 'very poor' council estates to Europe's largest private housing estate. It encourages pupils to raise money for a 'wide variety' of charities, including an orphanage in Romania, and fundraising events include a televised Christmas record. |

Background: St Patrick's RC Primary was founded in 1910 and was originally housed in the Church Hall before its present buildings were opened in 1930. Recently, funding from City Challenge together with contributions from the community, parents and business, has allowed a transformation of the interior of the school including the addition of a family room, a new office, a food technology area, a nursery, a computer suite, and general refurbishment and redecoration. St Patricks is essentially a community school, 'serving disadvantaged parents, many of whom have aspirations for their children, seeing good education as hugely important for them'. It aims to 'repay their commitment to school improvement through effective commitment to academic excellence and by holding events such as festivals and concerts to which the community is invited'. Children also give to charities such as National Children's Homes, Denim for Diabetes, CAFOD, Christian Aid and local charities. European links are fostered through linked schools in Italy, France and Rumania, while pupils have had the chance to meet their pen-pals from France in London and residential trips abroad are arranged for older children. Extra-curricular activites include the 'acclaimed' choir, homework club, design clubs, and the garden and environment group. The boys football team were county champions in 1998 and other teams, including girls football, compete with great sportsmanship and team-work. 'We attempt to give our children a dynamic and challenging education firmly rooted in tradition and Gospel values.' The school is over-subscribed.

Background: Founded in 1846 by the National Society as the first school in Thornaby, it moved to its current buildings in 1964. It is now composed of a grassed courtyard surrounded by traditional classrooms, plus three mobile classroom units to accommodate growing numbers. There is also a multi-purpose hall, a computer in every classroom and 'many other educational resources'. The school serves a catchment area of mixed private and council housing, but over 50% of pupils live outside the catchment and attend by parental choice. The various extra-curricular activities offered at lunchtimes and after school include musical instrument groups, drama, netball, rounders, athletics, country dancing and pottery. Tuition is available in the violin, the cello and brass instruments. A residential course takes place each year in the Yorkshire Dales. The school enjoys 'strong' support from parents and the community, particularly through the 'flourishing' parent-teacher association. A school bank enables children to save money.
